Nepal - Steep Runways at Synagboch (VNSB) and Lukla (VNLK)
DEPARTURE AIRPORT: Syangboche Airstrip at Namche Bazaar,Nepal (ICAO: VNSB). It is the closest airstrip to Mount Everest and Everest Base Camp, but it is not often used by visitors because it is not considered safe for reasonably-paced elevation acclimatization.
DEPARTURE NOTES: Depart runway 13. Run up the engine before releasing the brakes. During takeoff roll, angle to the right to go between trees.
DESTINATION AIRPORT: Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla, Nepal (ICAO: VNLK). It is popular because it is the starting point for treks to Mount Everest Base Camp. It is one of the most dangerous dangerous airports in the world. The elevation is 9,334 feet, the runway length is 1,729 feet, and it has an 11.7% gradient. There is a low prospect of a successful go-around on short final approach due to the terrain. There is high terrain immediately beyond the northern end of the runway and a steeply angled drop at the southern end of the runway.
