DISCLAIMER: Some of the smaller features and points of interest along this flight path could really benefit from custom scenery as autogen leaves something to be desired. Who knows I may try and learn to do this someday :)
NOTE: There are up to 4 airport stops (as opposed to the indicated 1), as there are some real-life airstrips (that autogen succesfully captures) but are not registered on charts or as airports in the simulator.
Flight Plan
Departure: Grants Pass (3S8) is an uncontrolled airport with a paved 4000' runway. Depart the airport and make heading of about 270° magnetic (290° true). Look for the road heading the same general direction (Galice Road) and keep an eye out for the Rogue River on your left. The river at this point is running north.
Waypoint 1: This waypoint is where the river meets the road. The river then changes direction to be about your current course (270). Follow the river. You'll know you're going the correct way if you see the road cross the river via a bridge soon after.
Waypoint 2: The river will make two sharp right turns. The second one is waypoint 2. Just after waypoint two on the left of the river is Galice, a small town/restaurant/lodge. If you look close you'll see a boatramp.
Waypoint 3: As you follow the river, there will be an unmistakeable bridge with a large boat ramp. This marks waypoint 3, as well as the beginning of the Wild and Scenic section of the Rogue River. NOTE: It is incredibly dangerous and illegal to fly under the bridge. The FASA (Federal Aviation Simulator Administration) will come after you ;)
Waypoint 4: One of the first major rapids is a waterfall, Rainie Falls! Unfortunately, in the sim it's just a 2D image. Although from the image you can make out the "fish ladder" (class 3 route for rafters to circumvent the falls) as well the main falls. Here's the real thing. From this point on, the flight goes under the Dolphin North MOA. The floor of the MOA is at 11,000' so it should not be of any issue.
Waypoint 5: Here, the river makes another right turn along with two rapids, upper and lower Black Bar Falls. Shortly after the turn, Black Bar Lodge can be seen on the left of the river.
Waypoint 6: The river makes a "horseshoe-like" bend at waypoint 6 and not surprising this part of the river is named "Horseshoe Bend". There is a long class-3 rapid on the upriver side of the bend.
These rafters don't seem to be moving very fast...are they okay? Flying within 500' of them would be a FASA violation.
Winkle Bar (OR74): Winkle Bar, a registered grass airstrip 1241' long is located here on the right of the river. It's used to help service the historical Zane Grey's Cabin which sits just adjacent to the airstrip. Grey built the cabin in 1926 and used it as a retreat to work on his books. (really needs custom scenery!)
Waypoint 7: Rogue River Ranch marks waypoint 7 on the right of the river. The ranch is owned by the BLM as a historical site. It houses a museum and small farm. Starting here, the next ~10nm of our trip will be in a designated "Wildnerness Area" and it is prohibited to go below 2000' AGL (determined by the highest point 2000' laterally). Careful, or FASA might come after you!
Waypoint 8: Before reaching waypoint 8, you will pass over Mule Creek Canyon (not well recognizable by the sim) as well as the most famous rapid of the Rogue, Blossom Bar (sadly, a 2D image in the sim, but the features of the rapid are recognizable). Just after is Paradise Lodge, where an unregistered grass airstrip is used and serves as our waypoint 8. To land, your approach needs to proceed along the river (heading downriver), where the river acts as a right base. Alternatively, a straight-in approach requires an aggressive slip in order to make a steep descent over a ridge on final. Be aware of which part of the grass is the airstrip, marked here with a red line.
Waypoint 9: Immediately downriver on the left is Half-Moon Bar Lodge. Another unregistered grass airstrip lies here. Here is the airstrip again marked in red. It may not be possible to tell, but the open grass area next to the airstrip is used as a golf course.
Waypoint 10: The river continues southwest eventually reaching Foster Bar which marks waypoint 10. This is the first take-out rafters use as the end of their trip down the "Wild and Scenic" section of the Rogue River. You will see a big parking lot, boat ramp, and the bathrooms (autogen picked this up quite nicely).
Waypoint 11: The small town of Agness marks waypoint 11. Agness is located where the Illinois River converges with the Rogue. You will see an unregistered airstrip pointing right to where the rivers intersect. You will now be outside of the Wilderness Area so it's legal to land. You didn't actually land in the Wilderness Area, did you?
Destination: Gold Beach Municipal (4S1) is our destination airport. It lies just on the south side of mouth of the Rogue River where the river feeds into the ocean. If you follow the river all the way to the ocean you will be right in the traffic pattern's final leg for runway 16! It's recommended to instead divert north in order to stay clear of the pattern. Notice from the VFR chart that runway 16 is a right pattern (presumably due to the inland terrain).
